Module 4- Activity 1- Assesment review

In studying the questionnaire I found that I used mostly summative assessment as the main form of determing the progress of students learning. However, lately I have come to recognize that figures on a test do not necessarily ascertain a student's strengths or weaknesses. There could be many factors that contribute to a pass or fail grade.  There is no provison in  summative assessment for these dynamics.  I have been exposed lately to the concept of the development of 21st century skills such as self direction, critical thinking, problem solving, leadership skills, collaboration and communication skills all of which can be assessed through formative assessment. I already foresee the many benefits of this type of assessment in my context and I am thinking of situations where classes have multiple intelligences and learning abilities.  The ultimate gain will be better academic performance and confident, self-directed, self motivated students.

CHANGE is a word that many of us are scared of.  However Learning is progressive and so has been research.  It means that I as a teacher must be willing to adapt to change so that the whole teaching learning process can yield its greatest.  As a teacher I cannot forget that students are humans , not subjects.   We cannot stand aloft without a care and treat them as numbers or non entities. They must be cared for and empathized with.  I have recognized that if I cannot to relate to them getting them to learn will turn out to be a frustrating exercise. We need to marry the ideas of teaching respect and responsibility to the reality that each student is a life that is screaming out for love, wishing that someone would understand them.
